No.6: Garden case study

  • Garden redesign
  • Planting plan
  • Regular ongoing maintenance

The challenge:

Reconfiguring an existing garden to create a dedicated space for mindful contemplation with water feature and seating, plus a separate productive area with a small greenhouse and vegetable beds.

What I did:

  • Reshaped and edged the lawn and borders
  • Refreshed existing plantings to make them more drought tolerant
  • Used a calming harmonious cool colour palette to visually expand the small space
  • Added a handmade commemorative bench overlooking a simple corten steel water trough with a bubbler fountain
  • Created a dedicated productive space partitioned from the main garden with a rose arbour and trellis panels. (This also hid a custom-made retractable washing line.)
  • Built a greenhouse with a paved base and a wooded edged vegetable bed
  • Created a gravel path retained in a grid system

Key plants:

Hydrangea aborescens 'Annabelle'; Ficus carica; Echinops ritro; Salvia rosmarinus; Verbena bonariensis; Choisya ternata; Campanula portenschlagiana; Veronicastrum virginicum 'Album'; Geranium Rozanne ('Gerwat' PBR); Rosa 'New Dawn'; Rosa 'Iceberg'; Erigeron karvinskianus; Hylotelephium spectabile 'Autumn Joy'; Bergenia cordifolia 'Rotblum'
